URGENT: today in Russia, a terrible bill passed in the Russian parliament’s lower house that censors all things considered “gay”. It’s our local partners’ worst nightmare and we need your help.
This vote comes off the back of two brutal anti-gay murders in Russia, and the trial of a major LGBT rights organisation today.
Tell world leaders to STOP the crackdown, add your name:

“…when we excuse homophobia as a matter of opinion instead of treating it as a destructive social illness, we invite fear to explode into violence…If we are ever to scrape the black rot of prejudice from the heart of our nation, we must stop excusing those who give it expression and even excuse. The next time someone dares to say, “Just because I don’t approve of homosexuality doesn’t make me a bigot,” we must all answer back, “Yes, it does. Not only does it make you a bigot, it makes you a criminal, a danger to me, my family, my community, my city, and my country.”’

Maggie Gallagher Doubles Down: Saying Heterosexuality Is Better Isn’t Anti-Gay →

Earlier this week, Maggie Gallagher tried to assert that championing heterosexuality does not denigrate gay people, even though her specific goal in doing so is to deny them the same legal protections of marriage. In a follow-up post at the National Review also excerpted by the National Organization for Marriage, Gallagher doubled down on this claim, even unflinchingly quoting ThinkProgress’s response. The guise of her post was an explanation of why infertile straight couples should still be allowed to marry — they are “part of the natural lifecycle of marriage” — but she then directly responded to ThinkProgress’s argument:
Marriage equality is going to be used primarily to enforce the new moral norm: no differences between straight and gay can matter. Or as Think Progress put it recently “At a basic level, it’s logically impossible to say that heterosexuality is better — or should be the norm — compared to homosexuality without simultaneously stating that homosexuality is worse — or abnormal. Either all people are equal in society or they are not; she cannot have her straights-only wedding cake and eat it stigma-free.”
It is possible to affirm an ideal without stigmatizing the alternatives — to affirm in the positive without pushing the negative. But gay marriage advocates insist that any affirmation of the ideal represents a denigration of them, no matter how expressed.
The problem with Gallagher’s argument is that she does push the negative. There would be no need to highlight her attempts to justify heterosexism if she were not also justifying the idea that the gay community should be denied access to the securities and benefits of marriage.
Conservatives have exerted an incredible amount of effort to find talking points that oppose same-sex marriage without sounding anti-gay. In fact, they have found ways to talk about their position on marriage without even mentioning gay people. As a consequence, they’ve painted themselves into some amusing rhetorical corners, arguing that even straight adoption is inferior (though they don’t oppose it) and marriage somehow keeps older men from cheatingon their post-menopausal wives. But despite their best claims to not be bigots, their motives continue to focus on relegating the gay community to second-class status.
Gallagher, NOM, and other conservatives regularly mention other values they have regarding marriage besides not allowing gay people access, such as opposition to divorce. But they don’t campaign against divorce — only marriage equality. If Gallagher truly does not want to perpetuate stigma against gay people, then she should discourage any attempt to codify her “ideal” into exclusive laws that discriminate.
Would you please just fucking STOP! STOP IT! Maggie.. you and everyone like you need to just stop hating other people because they are not like you. Your homophobia, judgement, and overall abusive behaviour is appalling. Find something to protest about that is ACTUALLY a problem… like poverty for fuck’s sake!

tw: gay bashing, gay slur/Gay Man Beaten in Hate Crime Assault in NYC's Hell's Kitchen |News | Towleroad →
Another anti-gay hate crime has reportedly occurred in NYC’s Hell’s Kitchen neighborhood. Alan Bounville, of the activist group Queer Rising, reports:
Last night, Friday, May 24th, a group of 9-10 men attacked one of my dearest friends, Eugene Lovendusky. They yelled “faggot” at Eugene as he was punched in the jaw. There have been a half-dozen, publicized violent anti-queer crimes in New York City in May 2013, including the cold-blooded murder of Mark Carson, 32, for being a “faggot.”
Adds Scott Wooledge on Facebook:
This hits home as I know this man personally. There have been a spree of anti-gay hate crimes in New York City this month. As people are unable to enforce their bigotry by laws and policies, they will turn to expressing their impotent hate on the streets.
I can’t do much to help make the world safer for my friends. But I have a platform, and I’m sending out this message to gay bashers: “You can kick us. You can punch us. You can shoot us dead as you did Mark Carson and Harvey Milk. But the LGBT community will not go back to the days before Stonewall Riots and DADT repeal. We will not abandon our righteous claim to be treated equally under the US Constitution and the laws of our states. You will lose eventually.
And eventually we LGBT people will meet our respective Gods with our hands clean of blood.”(viatncrm)

Hate Map →
This map geographically places the national concentration of various homophobic, racist, and ablest slurs used on twitter in the United States.
From the site:
To produce the map all tweets containing each ‘hate word’ were aggregated to the county level and normalized by the total twitter traffic in each county. Counties were reduced to their centroids and assigned a weight derived from this normalization process. This was used to generate a heat map that demonstrates the variability in the frequency of hateful tweets relative to all tweets over space. Where there is a larger proportion of negative tweets referencing a particular ‘hate word’ the region appears red on the map, where the proportion is moderate, the word was used less (although still more than the national average) and appears a pale blue on the map. Areas without shading indicate places that have a lower proportion of negative tweets relative to the national average.
The numbers that appear in the map during a mouse hover indicate the total number of hateful tweets and number of unique users sending them in each county.
